Standout! New Rel Attribute for Google news

Jo Rowbotham on 28 September 2024

Yesterday, Google announced a new rel attribute tag called standout.  The syntax for the tag is:

<link rel=”standout” href=”https://www.example.com/scoop_article_2″ />

You can view the official blog here: https://googlenewsblog.blogspot.com/2011/09/recognizing-publishers-standout-content

The tag will allow Google news to show the article with a “featured” label within the Google news homepage and news search results.

The tag allows you to send a hint to Google that the article has prominence and the tag can be used up to 7 times per week. Anymore usage will cause Google to devalue the link partially or even completely. We haven’t found an example yet but are looking forward to seeing how this tag is fully implemented over the upcoming months.
